People often ask what it was like to work on a project with Madonna. Although she was very involved with each phase of the book, I had total creative freedom to pursue my vision of the story. I got the impression, she really just wanted me to do my own thing. A treat for a guy making pictures in his basement.

In the very first meeting with the publisher, Callaway Editions, Nicholas Callaway asked me to do a trial painting. It was sort of an audition piece. He simply asked me to create one piece of art as a result of reading Madonna's manuscript. They did not want to discuss it or even see a sketch.

Although I was not terribly happy to learn that the job was not already mine, I knew just what image I would create. This image came to mind upon my first reading of the text. I wanted to capture the essence of the story while incuding a panoramic snapshot of the environment that the characters exist in.

The resulting painting not only "won" me the job, but went straight into the book with no changes and ultimately was chosen as the cover of the book.

Working on this project was a rewarding experience, from start to finish.
